Katsuyama Historical Preservation District


Katsuyama is located halfway on Izumo Kaido (one of the highways of old Japan) starting from Himeji through to Izumo Taisha (shrine).
Katsuyama town still lively presents a traditional atmosphere of Japanese people’s ordinarily life from Edo and Meiji era.
Noren in particular, is hung at an entrance of each house, showing a crest of the family or a symbol of the shop. Various meanings have been put into these Norens.

Historical Japanese landscape is all around in Katsuyama town, and Norens are a part of such scenery representing the town’s charm cultivated by people’s daily lifestyles.
