Bizen Pottery

Okayama is famous for its artisanal Bizen pottery. Bizen pottery is well known for its distinct colors and designs that are naturally produced by smoke and ash.

There is no glaze or paint applied to the pottery. The kiln temperatures reach upwards of 1200 degrees celsius, which causes the cedar ash inside the kiln to melt onto the pots and create a natural glaze. Rice grass and bran are also used to help create unique designs on the pottery.

The giant kilns are only heated up twice a year, due to the large quantity of cedar wood used for the heating process. No gas or electric systems are ever used for Bizen pottery, so the traditional use of wood is required.
